Consistent values and descriptions across every document — mismatches are the most common cause of clearance delays.
Export — West Africa
Container-load polyaluminium chloride from Jebel Ali to Lagos, Tema, Abidjan and Dakar — for state water boards, bottlers, breweries and industrial plants across West Africa.
| Destination | Discharge port | Indicative transit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nigeria | Lagos (Apapa / Tin Can) | 22–30 days | Allow generous buffer for port congestion |
| Nigeria | Onne / Port Harcourt | 24–32 days | Often smoother than Lagos for industrial cargo |
| Ghana | Tema | 20–28 days | Reliable clearance, good onward road network |
| Ivory Coast | Abidjan | 20–28 days | Regional hub for onward Sahel distribution |
| Senegal | Dakar | 18–26 days | Gateway for Mali and Mauritania |
West African transits are long and port clearance can be unpredictable, particularly at Lagos. Plan reorder points around a realistic 45-day cycle rather than the sailing time alone.
The single most common failure we see in West African chemical supply is not price and not quality — it is planning to a sailing schedule instead of to a delivery reality. Twenty-five days at sea plus port clearance plus inland haulage is not twenty-five days. Plants that reorder at four weeks of cover run dry.
We advise clients on this route to hold at least six to eight weeks of consumption on site and place orders on a rolling schedule rather than reactively. It costs a little more in working capital and saves a great deal in emergency air freight and lost production.
Documentation completeness is the other lever you actually control. Nigerian and Ghanaian customs clearance moves markedly faster with a complete, consistent document set — invoice, packing list, Certificate of Origin, batch CoA, SDS, and where required a pre-shipment inspection certificate. We prepare these before the container is sealed, not after it has sailed.
Compliance
Consistent values and descriptions across every document — mismatches are the most common cause of clearance delays.
Attested as required by the destination country's import regulations.
Required by most state water boards and by standards bodies at inspection.
Current SDS with correct transport classification for the shipped grade.
Some West African markets require PSI or conformity assessment. Confirm the current requirement with your local agent early.
Nigeria's SONCAP and equivalent regimes elsewhere may apply. Your local importer or agent handles registration on the destination side.
